An Official Rumor-Monger

I also remember LTJG Dunn, my CO at MOMAG Det 10 Okinawa, first at Naha and then also after the move up to Kadena. But this was at Naha. Readers may recall a certain Captain who's inspiring motivations led me in some lesser part to later give up on the Navy. That same captain, in response to irritation at the circulation of certain rumors who's content I cannot any longer recall, issued forth a sage proclamation that all those lesser CO's beneath him must do something to rein in the flow of misinformation.

Lt. Dunn considered this matter carefully and took it up with the Chief. Being a MNSA at the time, of course I was not privy to all (or indeed any) of the points taken under advisement. But an order is an order and Lt. Dunn was in no position to disobey it. Something official had to be done.

That's how MN1 Bauer ended up becoming the MOMAG Det 10, duly appointed Rumor Monger. His assignment was to author officially sponsored rumors, and to insure that only these official rumors may circulate. And it worked sure enough. Official rumors were duly authored and proudly affixed in a place of honor on the official bulletin board. And these were more entertaining by far than any among their predecessors.

The topics were both timely and inappropriate. And demonstrably false every one. They also had the strange quality, unlike many another rumor, of being immune to spontaneous mutation, since any who wished could compare against the official version. Solomon could have done no better, I am sure.
